Charleston sits at the confluence of the Elk and Kanawha rivers, in a river valley ringed by Appalachian hills, at an elevation of about 597 feet. Just west of downtown, the Kanawha River corridor running through Institute, South Charleston, Belle, and Nitro has been a center of American chemical manufacturing since World War I, when Nitro was built as a munitions town — locals still call this reach of the valley "Chemical Valley." Union Carbide (now Dow) has operated a large plant in Institute for decades, and DuPont has run a facility in Belle since the early 1900s.
The valley has a hard history to go with the nickname. In August 1985, a gas leak at the Institute plant — the same site that made the chemical involved in the 1984 Bhopal disaster in India — sent dozens of residents to the hospital. In August 2008, an explosion at the Bayer CropScience plant in Institute killed two workers and injured eight, prompting a federal Chemical Safety Board investigation. Kanawha County's official air monitors don't sit near the plants
