East Honolulu runs along the southeastern tip of Oahu, from the edge of the Waialae Country Club near Kahala out to Makapuu Point, taking in Aina Haina, Niu Valley, and Hawaii Kai along the way. The whole stretch faces almost directly into Hawaii's prevailing northeast trade winds, and Koko Head, right in the middle of it, is known for exactly that — Sandy Beach at its base draws kite flyers because the trade winds there blow strong and steady almost every day.
That steady airflow is a big part of why the Hawaii Department of Health's Clean Air Branch can say, without much qualification, that most places in the state enjoy some of the best air quality in the nation. The one exception: vog drifting over from Kilauea

When that reversal holds for long enough, vog can spread past the Big Island and reach islands across the state, Oahu included. It doesn't happen often, and East Honolulu's exposed, breezy location usually means it clears here faster than in more sheltered spots, but it's the one weather pattern locals keep an eye on.

East Honolulu isn't one neighborhood — it's a roughly nine-mile stretch of coastline running from the Kahala border through Aina Haina's valley floor, along the Hawaii Kai marina, and up over the dry, exposed ridges near Koko Head before the CDP line ends near Makapuu Point. A sensor reading from down in the Hawaii Kai marina, tucked behind Koko Head, can look noticeably different from one up on an exposed ridge a mile away, simply because of how the trade winds funnel around the headland.
