Erie's location on Lake Erie moderates more than just temperature. Erie County had it worse than anywhere else in the state that day — fine particulate smoke settled in from a fire season burning hundreds of miles north, the same smoke that had turned New York City's sky orange just days earlier.

What about the locomotive plant on East Lake Road?
