Winter inversions turn the valley into a lid

Fairbanks sits on the flood plain of the Tanana River, with low hills pressing in from the north and open, flat country running south toward the Alaska Range. On clear, windless winter nights, cold air pools in that low ground and gets capped by warmer air above it — an inversion that in the Tanana Valley can run as steep as 16°F for every 100 feet of altitude, enough to leave the valley floor 40 degrees or more colder than the hilltops just a couple thousand feet up.

That same still air is why Fairbanks gets ice fog — tiny suspended ice crystals that form once temperatures drop below about minus 35°F, fed by open water on the Chena River, power-plant steam, and exhaust from cars and furnaces. Ice fog is really just the visible half of the story; the same trapped air is also holding the fine particle pollution that doesn't show up to the eye.

Wood smoke, not wildfire, is why the EPA calls this 'Serious'

The EPA first designated part of the Fairbanks North Star Borough as nonattainment for 24-hour PM2.5 in 2009, then reclassified it from Moderate to Serious in 2017 after readings kept coming in over the federal limit. The borough's most recent design value, covering 2021 through 2023, runs around 56 micrograms per cubic meter — real progress from the worst years, but still above the federal line. In October 2025 the EPA finalized approval of Alaska's plan to bring the borough into attainment by the end of 2027, but until then, a cold, calm week in January can still turn the air seriously unhealthy.

North Pole usually has it worse, and the borough is paying people to switch heat sources

North Pole sits lower and flatter than Fairbanks within the same valley, so on the coldest, stillest nights it often traps even more particulate than Fairbanks itself — state and borough alerts frequently list North Pole at a higher curtailment stage than Fairbanks on the very same night. Both communities lean heavily on wood and oil stoves for heat, and it's that combination of biomass burning and denser, colder pooled air that makes North Pole the sharper edge of the borough's air-quality problem.

The Fairbanks North Star Borough now runs a Wood Stove Change-Out Program that pays homeowners $4,000 to $14,000 to swap an old stove for a cleaner-burning appliance, and as of December 31, 2024, homes in the nonattainment area were required to remove or replace outdated wood, pellet, coal, and hydronic heating devices entirely. On the worst nights, the state's curtailment program restricts solid-fuel burning to homes that have no other adequate source of heat.
