The tank went unstable on the afternoon of May 21, 2026. Evacuation orders expanded the next day and eventually covered parts of Garden Grove, Anaheim, Buena Park, Cypress, Stanton and Westminster; Garden Grove Unified and four neighboring districts closed campuses or moved classes online. The last orders were lifted on May 26. Methyl methacrylate is flammable and volatile, and for several days the worry was an explosion rather than a slow release.

South Coast AQMD put 24 stationary air monitors around the evacuation zone alongside the EPA, and as of May 25 the readings were described as completely normal. That is the honest headline, and it is not the whole story: residents reported nosebleeds, itching and dead pet birds, and CalMatters reported that the district had flagged compliance problems at the plant for years — operating equipment without permits, failing to keep required emissions records — in a settlement worth about $910,000. Worth being clear about the limits here too: neighborhood sensors like the ones on this page measure fine particles. They do not measure methyl methacrylate or any other specific chemical.

An inland city, sitting on the freeway grid

State Route 22, the Garden Grove Freeway, travels mostly within the city or along its border with Westminster before carrying on to the Orange Crush, where it meets Interstate 5 and State Route 57 just past the city's eastern end. Being inland matters: South Coast AQMD keeps its regulatory monitors away from the Orange County coast because, as a district spokesman put it, the highest concentrations of ozone and PM2.5 tend to be inland.

The district also splits Orange County into six separate forecast areas — North Orange County, Central Orange County, North Coastal Orange County, Saddleback Valley, Central Coastal and Capistrano Valley — which is a fair hint that a countywide number will not tell you much. Traffic pollution falls off quickly with distance from the road, so whether the 22 is your problem depends mostly on how many blocks away you sleep.

The fires that spoil the air here burn miles away, in the foothills of the Santa Ana Mountains. During the Bond Fire in December 2020, South Coast AQMD reported unhealthy AQI levels throughout northern Orange County and the Long Beach area, with very unhealthy readings in central Orange County cities including Irvine and Newport Beach. The same advisory declared a no-burn day banning wood burning in fireplaces and outdoor devices across the entire South Coast Air Basin. Nothing was burning within ten miles of Garden Grove, and the air was still bad.
