Indianapolis has two air problems that show up in different seasons. Central Regions: Ozone was Good across the area the past two days, and PM2.5 was a mixture of Good/Moderate on Wednesday and then mostly Moderate for Thursday. As of 12Z this morning, surface high pressure is over the southeastern states, and there is also a boundary across the mid-Great Lakes region. This boundary will drop south today as a cold front and eventually reach the area by tonight, possibly producing a few showers and storms, but the higher probabilities are for Saturday. Once the cold front drops south of the state Saturday evening, expect high pressure to build back over the area from the Great Lakes region for the rest of the period. There is still a Heat Advisory in effect until 8pm tonight for heat indices of 105. Highs today will be in the 90's with dew points in the lower 70's. Winds will be west at 5 to 10 mph and mixing heights will be 6000 ft. Highs will be around 90 for Saturday with dew points in the lower 70's. Winds will be northwest at 5 to 10 mph and mixing heights will be around 4000 ft. Then for Sunday into Monday highs drop into the lower to mid-80's with dew points in the lower 60's. It will feel like a nice cool down for the area. Winds will be northeast at 5 to 10 mph with mixing heights both days at 4600 ft. Then for Tuesday the area is back up to highs around 90 with dew points in the mid 60's. As for guidance this forecast period, the Canadian is predicting Ozone to be Moderate today/tomorrow and then Good for Sunday. The 06Z BC NOAA model is predicting Good through Sunday which is probably more likely based on persistence and the current forecast. Will lean closer to NOAA model and go with Good for the entire period as it and the Canadian model are both hinting at some sort of clean out of the area by the cold front. As for PM2.5, the NOAA model is also hinting at a clean out by predicting Moderate for today and then going with Good through the weekend. Think this forecast makes sense so will be going with it and also adding a Good for Monday and then going back up to Moderate for Tuesday for the return of the heat and more stagnant conditions.

The summer ozone problem is bad enough that the city runs its own alert program
Indianapolis is one of the few cities that runs a public air-quality alert program under its own name. The Office of Sustainability operates Knozone, and on days when hot sun, light winds, and overnight buildup are forecast to push ground-level ozone into the orange Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups range, it declares a Knozone Action Day. These cluster from late spring through summer, when ozone forms fastest. The first Action Day of 2026 landed on June 4.
Ozone is not smoke you can see. It forms when sunlight cooks the exhaust from cars, trucks, and industry, which is why the worst days are often the hottest and calmest ones. The American Lung Association's 2025 State of the Air report gave the Indianapolis-Carmel-Muncie metro an F for ozone, ranking it 54th worst of 228 metro areas with about five unhealthy days a year. On a Knozone day, that ozone is the reason someone with asthma feels it on a run even when the sky looks clear.
The Crossroads of America runs on diesel
Indianapolis calls itself the Crossroads of America for a reason. The city is wrapped by the I-465 beltway and cut through by I-70, I-65, and I-69, and it is one of the busiest freight hubs in the country. That means a steady flow of long-haul trucks and the diesel exhaust that comes with them, concentrated along the interstates and the warehouse districts that feed them.
That traffic shows up in the particle numbers. The same 2025 State of the Air report ranked Indianapolis 21st worst in the nation for short-term particle pollution, with roughly 9.8 unhealthy days a year, and 11th worst for year-round particle pollution. Fine particles from diesel and combustion are small enough to reach deep into the lungs, and if you live or work near one of the big highways, your everyday exposure is higher than the citywide average suggests.
Wildfire smoke reaches Indiana too
Indianapolis is a long way from any forest fire, but smoke does not respect that distance. In June 2023, smoke from wildfires in Quebec and elsewhere in Canada drifted south and settled a visible haze over downtown, pushing air across Central Indiana into unhealthy territory. At the peak of that stretch, more than a third of the US population was under air-quality alerts from the same smoke.
The Lung Association pointed directly at extreme heat and wildfires as reasons air quality worsened in its most recent report, and that pattern is not a one-time event.
