Ocean County flunks its ozone grade almost every year
The American Lung Association's 2026 "State of the Air" report, covering 2022 through 2024, gave Ocean County a failing grade for ozone — one of the worst records of any county in New Jersey. That's not a one-year blip: the county sits inside the Philadelphia-Wilmington-Atlantic City, PA-NJ-MD-DE ozone nonattainment area, which the EPA reclassified to "Serious" in 2024, a tougher standard reserved for places that have missed the healthy-air bar for years running.
Ozone isn't smoke from a local stack — it's a gas that cooks together on hot, still, sunny afternoons from car exhaust, lawn equipment, and industrial emissions, including plenty that blows in from the New York and Philadelphia metro areas well before it ever reaches Lakewood.
