Delaware has no mountains to create the kind of valley inversions that trap wildfire smoke in California towns. Instead, New Castle County's air quality risk is almost entirely about ground-level ozone, which forms when sunlight cooks vehicle and industrial emissions on hot, still days. DNREC's Division of Air Quality runs a seasonal Ozone Action Day program spanning roughly May through September, and on the worst summer afternoons it asks sensitive groups — kids, older adults, people with asthma — to cut back on strenuous outdoor activity.
Because Middletown sits along the Route 301 and Route 1 corridors that funnel commuter traffic between Dover, Wilmington, and Philadelphia, local vehicle exhaust adds to a regional ozone problem that starts well outside town limits.
