Central Oklahoma runs its own Ozone Alert program
ACOG issues a Central Oklahoma Air Quality Alert Day whenever forecasters expect ozone to climb into unhealthy territory across the eight counties of the metro region, including Oklahoma, Cleveland, and Canadian counties. On alert days, the program asks residents, businesses, and industry to voluntarily cut ozone-forming emissions — carpool instead of driving alone, refuel after dark, put off mowing the lawn — the same playbook used by similar voluntary programs in cities trying to stay ahead of a federal nonattainment designation.
The incentive is real money, not just air-quality bragging rights. ACOG's own Cost of Nonattainment Study estimates that if the Oklahoma City metro area is ever formally designated in violation of EPA ozone standards, the resulting permitting restrictions and compliance costs could run the region $9.6 to $15.2 billion over the next 20 to 30 years. The open plains help, but they don't erase the problem
Oklahoma City sits at about 1,198 feet elevation in the Sandstone Hills, a landscape of gentle 250-to-400-foot rises rather than anything resembling a basin. The North Canadian River, renamed the Oklahoma River inside city limits, cuts through downtown, but there is nothing about the terrain that traps air the way a valley does in parts of California. Prevailing winds out of the south and south-southeast through summer, shifting northerly in winter, usually keep pollution moving rather than letting it pool.
