Holiday fireworks left their mark on the air over Washington, D.C., while large wildfires kept pressure on communities in Colorado and southern France. Here's a plain-English look at the day's air-quality and wildfire news.

Record DC fireworks show triggered a Code Red air alert

Washington, D.C., and the surrounding area were placed under a Code Red air quality alert on Sunday, hours after a record-breaking Independence Day fireworks display over the capital, the Washington Examiner reports. A Code Red means air quality reached levels unhealthy for sensitive groups, including older adults, children, and people with certain medical conditions, and officials advised those residents to limit time outdoors.

Air quality across Washington, northern Virginia, and the nearby suburbs had returned to the moderate range by Monday morning. Fireworks smoke tends to be intense but short-lived — checking a current reading before heading out is a simple way to know when it has cleared.

Aspen Acres Fire tops 91,000 acres as evacuation checkpoints keep moving

Colorado's Aspen Acres Fire is estimated at more than 91,000 acres burned, and Pueblo-area residents are grappling with smoke and ash affecting their health and daily routines, according to KRDO's ongoing coverage. Southern Fremont County moved to a mandatory evacuation on Sunday night.

Drivers in the evacuation zone are also contending with a Highway 67 checkpoint that has shifted locations several times since last week, KRDO reports. Colorado National Guard personnel staffing the checkpoint say they manage the locations requested by local authorities, and many drivers passing through have been evacuees hoping to check on livestock and property.

Pyrénées wildfire keeps fans away from the Tour de France

A large wildfire in France's Pyrénées-Orientales, which has burned almost 4,500 acres, prompted Tour de France organizers to ban spectators from the finale of the race's third stage on Monday, as Arkansas Online reports. Nearly 700 firefighters were battling the blaze, which led authorities to order the evacuation of more than two dozen villages on Sunday night.

The same report notes Greece saw 96 wildfires break out over 48 hours, most quickly brought under control, with more than 200 firefighters and 29 aircraft deployed to the most significant fire west of Athens.

Colorado community honors three fallen firefighters

A memorial service was held over the weekend in Grand Junction for Emily Barker, Nick Hutcherson, and Sydney Watson, three members of a Helitack crew killed on June 27 while battling the fire that became the Snyder Fire on the Utah–Colorado border, CBS News reports. Two other firefighters were seriously injured in the same event, known as a burnover.

"They showed up to make order out of chaos day after day with purpose, dedication and heart," U.S. Wildland Fire Service Chief Brian Fennessy said at the service.

San Diego port moves toward a major electric truck hub

The Port of San Diego is moving toward approval of a large electric truck charging hub in National City that backers say will significantly reduce diesel pollution in one of California's most air-impacted communities, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. The facility would charge up to 70 heavy-duty electric trucks at once and is a centerpiece of the port's plan to eliminate diesel truck emissions from port operations by 2030.

The port's board votes July 14. National City's letter of support also flags concerns, including fire risks from storing large lithium-ion batteries near homes and businesses.

Semi-truck fire sparks small wildfire along I-5 in Castaic

A semi-truck fire along the 5 Freeway in Castaic, California, ignited nearby brush on Monday, growing to about 15 acres and prompting an evacuation warning for the Paradise Ranch area between Templin Highway and Pyramid Lake, the Orange County Register reports. No injuries were reported, and the cause remains under investigation.
