Michigan's sixth straight alert day — with relief in sight
Michigan is now on its sixth consecutive day of a statewide air quality alert as smoke keeps drifting over the Great Lakes, CBS News Detroit reports. The alert has been extended through Monday, with air expected to stay unhealthy for sensitive groups. Detroit's air on July 16 and 17 ranked among the worst in the world, and city officials reported a spike in EMS calls related to respiratory issues.
The good news: the fires in northern Minnesota and parts of Canada got much-needed rain over the weekend, and remaining smoke will likely clear out of Michigan over the next 48 hours, according to MLive. State environmental officials expect slow improvement Monday as winds shift, though some smoke will linger.
Illinois declares an Air Pollution Action Day
The Illinois EPA issued an Areawide Air Pollution Action Day for Sunday and Monday, with smoke and particulate levels expected to reach the "unhealthy for sensitive groups" range in parts of the state, Patch reports. In McHenry County, paramedics have responded to respiratory distress and chest pain calls during the stretch of poor air, though officials note those calls are routine for EMS and hard to tie directly to smoke.
Conditions are expected to improve across Illinois from southwest to northeast on Monday. Checking current readings before extended time outdoors is a sensible habit on days like this.
Ohio's alert stretches on; Cincinnati at 106
Ohio's statewide air quality alert was extended over the weekend as smoke pushed all the way south to the Ohio River, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. As of Monday morning, Cincinnati's Air Quality Index sat at 106 — unhealthy for sensitive groups — with Dayton in the same range. Canada's national wildland fire summary counted 944 wildfires burning as of Monday morning, 104 of them classified as out of control.
The smoke becomes a tariff fight
President Trump said he intends to hold Canada financially responsible for the smoke, threatening increased tariffs and suggesting Canada should "pay us some damages," the New York Post reports. He raised the issue with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at Sunday's World Cup final, and several lawmakers have introduced legislation to penalize Canada over the fires.
Carney pushed back, saying support would be more helpful than complaints and noting Canada has sent help to the U.S. during its own major fires, as the Mercury News reports. Many of Canada's current major fires are believed to have been started by a wave of lightning strikes around July 6.
