Monday brought the first real good news out of southwest France in nearly a week — and a warning that it may not last. Here is what was reported today.

The Gironde fire stopped growing overnight

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said the wildfire burning near Bordeaux had stopped growing, the Associated Press reported, the first glimmer of hope since the blaze forced 220,000 people to flee. "It hasn't progressed during the night," Nunez said, while cautioning that woodlands were still smoldering and the battle was not yet won.

NPR reports that President Emmanuel Macron called a crisis meeting Monday, and that no new evacuations were ordered. Authorities did ban children's holiday camps in the region as a precaution.

The fire was intense enough to make its own weather

Before it calmed, the blaze generated its own winds and advanced erratically toward the Bordeaux metropolitan area, Nunez posted on X, according to Fortune. An estimated 42,000 hectares — about 162 square miles — had burned in Gironde, much of it forest and scrubland left tinder-dry by successive heat waves. Some 2,500 firefighters were mobilized, backed by 18 planes and helicopters.

CNBC describes the fire as a rare "pyrocumulonimbus" — a fire cloud that generates its own thunderstorms, winds and whirlwinds. Firefighter captain Nicolas Braz told AFP the behavior made the fire "erratic and unmanageable." Fires that build their own weather are the kind that send smoke high and far, well beyond the burn area.

A fourth heat wave is forecast this week

Temperatures are expected to climb to 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) or higher in parts of France, Spain and Portugal this week, The New York Times reports. It is the fourth heat wave to hit Europe since May.

The European Forest Fire Information System has parts of southwestern France and northern Spain under "very extreme fire conditions" — its highest category — through at least Wednesday. Météo-France warned that the dry Mistral and Tramontane winds would develop from Monday, and said soil moisture across France had reached unprecedented lows as of July 22.

Starlink turned on free satellite texting in Spain

SpaceX activated free satellite text messaging for wildfire-hit parts of Spain after blazes knocked out mobile networks, Benzinga reports. Compatible LTE phones connect automatically, though coverage works best with a clear view of the sky.

It is SMS only, not broadband. That is still enough for people to confirm they are safe and coordinate an evacuation when towers or fiber go down.

A new fire started near Yosemite

The Dove Fire ignited in Tuolumne County near Sonora, the gateway to Yosemite National Park, and was 1% contained early Monday, the Ventura County Star reports, citing CalFire. It had grown to more than 220 acres, with mandatory evacuation orders in place. The cause is under investigation.

Early-stage fires like this one are worth watching if you live downwind — smoke conditions can change faster than containment numbers do.

A conviction in the 2024 Park Fire

Ronnie Dean Stout II was found guilty in Butte County Superior Court of intentionally starting the Park Fire on July 24, 2024, by pushing a burning car into a ravine in upper Bidwell Park, The Mercury News reports. That fire burned almost 430,000 acres, 427 homes in Cohasset and Forest Ranch, and more than 300 other structures. Sentencing is scheduled for October 9.
