Spain has seen more than 244,000 hectares (603,000 acres) burn in 400 fires so far this year, according to European Forest Fire Information System estimates cited by Reuters. That is roughly six times the area burned by the same point last year.

British Columbia confirms a death in the Bald Range fire

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police confirmed the death of an 80-year-old woman who died while trying to flee her Meadow Valley home during the fast-moving Bald Range fire, UPI reports. Police believe her death to be a result of the wildfire; the B.C. Coroners Service is investigating. It was the only known wildfire fatality in the province as of early Monday.

The fire, first reported Friday evening near Summerland, had burned more than 33,000 acres and remained out of control as of Sunday morning, The New York Times reports. Roughly 20,000 people were under evacuation orders across Summerland, Peachland, Central Okanagan and Okanagan-Similkameen, as well as the Penticton Indian Band. A provincial state of emergency remained in effect with 103 active fires burning, and authorities expected more high temperatures and stronger wind gusts.

Spokane-area crews keep working containment lines

In Washington, crews fighting three wildfires that began in the Spokane area more than a week ago continued cleanup near containment lines on Sunday, the Associated Press reports via PennLive. Some residents who evacuated were still waiting to learn what was left of their homes.

Laurie Allen, who left Nine Mile Falls north of Spokane last weekend with her husband and pets, said roads into her neighborhood were still closed Sunday, though a friend had told her that her house was intact under a layer of ash. More than 107,000 hectares (264,000 acres) of forest and other land have burned across the country, according to Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago.

The largest blaze has scorched about 743 hectares (1,836 acres) in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, which authorities closed to visitors until further notice. More than 50 hectares of peatland have burned in Jambi province on Sumatra, generating haze and threatening air quality. No injuries have been reported. Officials said difficult terrain, strong winds and dry conditions were hampering the response.

Xcel Energy files a wildfire mitigation plan in Texas

Southwestern Public Service Company, an Xcel Energy subsidiary, filed a Wildfire Mitigation Plan with the Public Utility Commission of Texas on August 4, the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reports. The plan lays out a framework for assessing wildfire risk and prioritizing mitigation work.

Proposed components include weather stations tracking local conditions, AI-enabled wildfire detection cameras, drone-based equipment inspections, and increased inspections and vegetation management in higher-risk areas.
