Santa Ana winds drove a fast-moving fire into neighborhoods in south Orange County on Friday. Elsewhere, new reporting put numbers on the air pollution from a New Jersey data center, and a smaller wildfire burned homes in Arkansas.

Norte Fire burns homes between San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano

The Norte Fire started around 11:30 a.m. Friday near San Clemente and pushed into San Juan Capistrano, driven by hot, dry Santa Ana winds, as WJLA reports. More than 500 firefighters worked the blaze, and Capistrano Unified closed or dismissed schools early.

By late Friday the fire had burned at least 570 acres and destroyed six homes, KABC-TV reports. Two firefighters were injured, and evacuation orders covered about 16,000 residents and 6,000 homes. Elevated winds were expected through Saturday, so smoke may drift across nearby communities; it's a sensible day to keep windows closed if you can smell it.

A New Jersey data center's generators ran for nearly a year

DataOne, a Microsoft-linked data center in Vineland, New Jersey, ran 62 unpermitted gas-fired generators for nearly a year before state regulators stepped in, according to records obtained by Floodlight. The state fined the company $1 million.

A Rutgers researcher estimated the generators emitted about 140 tons of nitrogen oxides (NOx), smog-forming gases linked to asthma and heart attacks. That would put the site among New Jersey's top five NOx polluters of 2025. Experts said that at full use, the fleet could emit more than 1,500 tons a year.

Wildfire near Pine Bluff, Arkansas, about 90% contained

A roughly 100-acre wildfire along McFadden Road north of Pine Bluff destroyed two homes, two shops, several vehicles and farm equipment, Arkansas Online reports. It was 90% contained Friday afternoon, with no injuries reported.

Officials believe a rail car sparked the fire, though the cause hasn't been confirmed. The fire department reminded residents that wildfire danger is high and asked people not to burn.

Iran heads into winter with dirtier fuel

An opinion piece in the Washington Examiner argues that war damage to Iran's energy system means more burning of dirtier fuel this winter. It notes that Iran's deputy health minister estimated air pollution caused nearly 60,000 deaths in a single year, before the war began.
