Today's news starts with a fast-moving fire in southern Arkansas that crews have now contained, then turns to California and Oregon, where communities are dealing with what this year's fires left behind.
Wildfire near Magnolia, Arkansas fully contained
A wildfire that burned about 150 acres northeast of Magnolia was 100% contained on Wednesday, Arkansas Online reports. It was first reported at 3:31 p.m. Tuesday near County Road 47, and gusty easterly winds pushed the flames west, prompting evacuations along Columbia Road 511.
More than 75 firefighters from six fire departments responded, along with Arkansas Forestry Division crews. No injuries or damaged structures were reported, and the cause is under investigation. Rugged Cross Cowboy Church served as a temporary shelter, according to earlier coverage.
Windy, dry afternoons like Tuesday's can spread grass and brush fires quickly, so it's a good time to hold off on outdoor burning.
San Clemente faces fire and coastal erosion at once
A fire broke out in San Clemente's foothills on Friday and burned toward hillside neighborhoods, destroying at least six homes in nearby San Juan Capistrano, The Mercury News reports, carrying a Los Angeles Times story. On Monday, firefighters were washing fire retardant off the streets and finishing containment lines.
The Orange County beach town has also been dealing with coastal erosion from El Niño-related storms, and forecasters put the chance of a very strong El Niño at virtually 100%. Southern California is just entering its traditional fire season.
Oregon offers insurance help after a record fire season
The Oregon Division of Financial Regulation will hold six open houses from Oct. 28 to Nov. 19 to help homeowners find insurance after the state's record-setting wildfire season, the Salem Statesman Journal reports. The season claimed 217 homes and structures, burned 2.1 million acres, and cost $1.4 billion to suppress.
The events, in Medford, Klamath Falls, Redmond, The Dalles, La Pine and Black Butte/Sisters, will cover shopping for coverage, handling nonrenewals, and one-on-one guidance.
California lawmakers take up utility wildfire liability
California Assembly members held the first in an expected series of hearings on utilities' efforts to reduce wildfire risk and the liability they face when their equipment starts a fire, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports, carrying a Sacramento Bee story. The hearings follow recent winds that led Southern California Edison and PG&E to shut off power to more than 150,000 combined customers.
Forest Kaser, who leads the state's Office of Energy Infrastructure Safety, told lawmakers it is possible to drive catastrophic utility wildfires to zero, but that utilities can't do it alone.
